It was during 2003 Cricket World-cup, I met Sachin in person. I was at
Johannesburg and was invited by the Consulate General of India to join the
dinner hosted in honor of the visiting India Team. In fact, I never met any
cricketer in person before. So, it was a wonderful evening with great
experience. And I came across the God of Cricket face to face, had a chance to
take photo and had dinner together. What a memorable experience that I cherish
forever!
From that evening, what I remember of this great human being is some
kind of aura, some kind of radiance filled with humility emanating from him. He
is truly a humble, soft-spoken person with simple gait; even he was treated as
God of cricket that time itself, a decade back.
Sachin is a legend, an icon in world cricket. When he steps into the
field with the willow in his hand, he gives confidence to the dressing room as
well as to the whole nation glued to the TV. His style of batting and easy flow
of boundaries make batting look like a simple task. With every ball that he
faces, statistics flow and make everyone look at his batting with awe.
He has raised the bar for next Sachin to come in our Indian cricketing
team, at least in our life- time. His decision on retirement from ODI cricket format
is his personal one, but we all will miss him. Salute Sachin ---we will miss
you this evening when India is facing Pakistan for T20 match.
