Current upsurge in smart phones and tablets in the market enriches the users’ web experience every day. The way the content is consumed on these mobile devices, challenges these mobile devices not to be limited to communication or entertainment platforms only, rather extending to business and productivity platforms.
The promising feature of HTML5 is in handling multimedia and graphical content on the browser without any proprietary plug-ins and APIs which will allow users to experience a new behaviour in using the web browsers.
It is an ordeal for a user to switch between a number of devices in a day i.e. office PC, home PC, Laptop, Tablet, Smart Phone etc. Not only the user needs to keep track of contents like documents, music, video, photo, eBook etc on each device; but also needs to have required application on the device compatible to respective OS.
While applications like Google Docs, DropBox etc extend cloud based content repository for storing the documents, HTML5 will allow applications to be developed and run on a web browser. Thus, the browser will become the universal computing platform and applications will be independent of device operating systems like Windows 7, Windows XP, Android, Research-in-Motion O/S, Apple iOS etc.
So, the future web centric applicationswill empower the users to be independent of location and device; while allowing larger storage capacity and processing power which is not limited to inherent specifications of the devices.
Of course, certain glitches around issues like security, fragmentation between standards and web browser need to be addressed before it is launched commercially.
